Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera discussed with multi-religious leaders and members of civil societies, to resolve the issues and share alternative proposals for difficulties faced post-electricity tariff hike.
Taking to Twitter, he said the groups discussed the electricity tariff revision, tariff formulas, and restructuring of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
Minister Wijesekera also said they discussed on the use of renewable energy and introducing rooftop solar power for religious institutions.
The discussion was held following many religious leaders condemned the upward electricity tariff revision that was imposed on 10 August, after nine long years.
After receiving the first monthly bill following the tariff hike, many claimed that it seemed as if the Government is “punishing” religious places with the move to increase electricity tariffs.
Earlier this week, a group of Buddhist monks have requested Buddhist temples countrywide to turn off their lights and leave the temples in pitch dark on the upcoming Vap Full Moon Poya Day. This proposed move is in protest of the 555% increase in electricity tariffs on places of worship, including Buddhist temples.
They claim that religious institutions are not profit generating entities, while the burden of the economic crisis and mismanagement should not be placed on the public.
