Power and Energy Minister engages with 35 TUs to iron out electricity sector reforms

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera convened a discussion with representatives from 35 trade unions concerning the proposed reforms of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and the broader energy sector. 

During the discussion held last Thursday, the Minister provided a detailed update on the progress of the reforms within the electricity sector. 

As per the Minister, the discussions surrounded critical aspects such as the structure of the new proposed Electricity Act, projected transition timelines, strategies for effective human resource management and transfer plans and considerations regarding employee benefits and pensions. 

The meeting also highlighted the invaluable assistance garnered from various development agencies, vital to facilitating a seamless transition. Among the topics covered was the establishment of a dedicated Reform Secretariat, which will play a pivotal role in orchestrating and implementing the multifaceted reforms. 

In addition, plans for the creation of successor companies within the reformed framework were deliberated upon. 

Representatives hailing from all unions affiliated with the CEB, along with the head of the Reform Secretariat, participated in the deliberations, underscoring the collaborative nature of this massive initiative.
