Power play: Energy Ministry seeks green light from Finance Ministry for electricity tariff slash

The Power and Energy Ministry yesterday announced that the approved electricity tariff revision by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) will only be implemented by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) after receiving official confirmation and guidance from the Finance Ministry.

The announcement soon followed the PUCSL’s decision to slash electricity tariffs by an average of 20% across all categories for the first half of 2025, effective from today (18).

The announcements reflect lack of coordination and clarity in decision making.

“Once again, it seems the Government is all talk and no action. Announcing electricity tariff revisions after delay without ensuring necessary approvals just adds to the confusion and frustration of the public,” electricity users lamented.

They opined that clear communication and streamlined processes are essential to maintain public trust and deliver on promises effectively.

Electricity users also charged that before being elected, the Government promised significant tariff reductions of over 30%, but now the outcomes fall short.

“At this point, the Government is neither offering the promised 30% tariff cut nor an impactful decision,” they alleged.
