President attends CHOGM inauguration

President Maithripala Sirisena attended the opening ceremony of the 25th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), held under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.  The 25th CHOGM commenced today. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Towards a Common Future’ and special attention will be given to the areas of prosperity, security, fairness and sustainability to achieve the goals of Commonwealth countries.

The position of Commonwealth Chair-in-Office, held by the leader of the government of the country which hosts CHOGM, will be transferred at the summit from the Prime Minister of Malta to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
