President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday urged world leaders to unite in addressing transnational challenges, noting that climate change, financial instability and technological disruption affect all nations, regardless of wealth or status.
Speaking at the 2025 World Governments Summit in the UAE, he outlined Sri Lanka’s vision for economic growth, governance reforms, and sustainable development, whilst calling for stronger international cooperation.
Dissanayake cautioned of mounting financial pressures in the global economy, highlighting the risks posed by strict monetary conditions, looming sovereign debt crises, and an inadequate international financial system.
He stressed the urgency of financial reforms to create a fairer economic landscape.
On governance, the President also emphasised social justice and the rule of law as pillars of a structured and responsible State.
He also underscored the role of a free press and social activism in holding officials accountable and ensuring systematic support for vulnerable communities.
The President also called for an updated Universal Declaration of Human Rights that includes digital access and environmental rights, recognising the evolving landscape of global rights and freedoms.
With regards to technology, Dissanayake highlighted the threats posed by automation and robotics to employment, advocating for structured initiatives on education and skills development to help workers transition to new opportunities.
He also stressed the need for stronger cyber security measures to protect societies in an increasingly digital world.
Quoting Martin Luther King Jr., he called on world leaders to recognise their shared responsibility in shaping a better future.
Reflecting on Sri Lanka’s journey, he noted how the country had united to rebuild after the economic crisis, concluding with a call for global solidarity. “Let us come together and rebuild the world,” he asserted.
