President clarifies elections timeline and funding

The Presidential Secretariat yesterday said the Presidential Election will be held within the mandated period. According to the current timeline, the General Election will be held next year.

Accordingly, financial provisions for the General Election will be provided for in the 2025 Budget.

The responsibility of conducting elections lies with the Election Commission of Sri Lanka and the Government will be communicating with the Commission as and when required.

The statement comes after the Elections Commissioner said no funds had been allocated for the conduct of two elections in 2024 in response to a Cabinet decision last week that Rs. 10 billion has been approved for the same.
