President regrets Audit Bill delay

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday expressed regret over the delay of the proposed Audit Bill and pledged to focus on passing it through Parliament as it would significantly increase financial accountability within the Government. 

The Audit Bill, which has already been presented to Cabinet more than 20 times but returned to the drawing board each time, was essential to establish the National Audit Commission, President Sirisena told reporters. 

“We have had several rounds of discussions over the Audit Bill in Cabinet and I am doing my best to fast-track the process as much as possible. I regret the fact that it has taken so long,” he said. 

The Audit Commission is essential to make institutional changes as well, he added. The Audit Bill, which was a key promise of the Government, is also needed for the proper functioning of the Auditor General’s Department.
