As Sri Lanka’s Presidential candidates make their final push before the mandatory silence period begins ahead of the 21 September election, major rallies are set to take place today at various key locations across the island.
Independent candidate President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa will both wrap up their campaigns in Maradana today evening.
National People’s Power (NPP) Presidential hopeful Anura Kumara Dissanayake will conclude his campaign in Nugegoda.
Mawbima Janatha Party (MJP) candidate businessman Dilith Jayaweera will address supporters in Kottawa, while Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidate Namal Rajapaksa will hold his rally in Piliyandala.
These final events mark the candidates’ last opportunity to engage with voters before the silence period, which begins at midnight on 18 September and prohibits all forms of campaigning.
The upcoming Presidential election is highly anticipated, with a number of prominent politicians and parties competing in what many predict to be a close race.
