Owners and employees of polythene manufacturing companies yesterday staged a protest in Colombo against the Government’s proposed polythene ban from 1 September 2017. They claimed the move would lead to a loss of employment and closure of local industries. They demanded a grace period of five years to come up with alternatives while stating that they were not solely responsible for the garbage crisis. They also urged President Maithripala Sirisena to intervene in the matter
