Public Security Minister Tiran Alles made a sudden observation visit to the Bandaranaike International Airport at Katunayake to inspect the eased security protocols initiated last week to enhance passenger convenience during peak hours.
Following his inspection tour to key touch points such as Immigration counters, security check-ins and arrival and departure passenger terminals, the Minister discussed the ground plan of the BIA with the Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Ltd., Chairman Major General (Retd.) G.A. Chandrasiri, the Public Security Ministry Secretary Vianney Gunathilaka, Immigration Department Controller-General Harsha Ilukpitiya and other airport officials.
They also discussed the establishment of new e-gate counters to enhance passenger convenience without compromising their safety.
The Minister has also instructed to set up a new CCTV camera control centre, explaining that the system is equipped with advanced technology to ensure round-the-clock monitoring and seamless security processes per other international airport standards.
From 8 August, Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka), took the initiative to remove the scanning machines from their previous locations, reducing the number of checkpoints to two before passengers board their flights.
The scanning machines were initially introduced during times of heightened terrorist threats, leading to increased congestion and lengthy lines within the terminal. Passengers had to undergo scanner checks at multiple points, causing significant delays and inconvenience. Thus, addressing this issue and enhancing the passenger experience
The Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) said it has introduced these measures in line with the Civil Aviation Authority and International Civil Aviation Regulations, to eliminate inconvenience to the passengers and to offer efficient and enhanced services to passengers transiting through the terminals.
Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka), earlier this week said a 24-hour monitoring system will be implemented to ensure comprehensive security oversight. The system incorporates a panel equipped with advanced technology security CCTV cameras, totalling 446 in number, positioned throughout the airport.
