The public recreational area of Port City Colombo, which consists of a green zone as well as play areas for children, water sports and other facilities, will be opened next year, according to the officials of the Ministry of Urban Development, Water Supply and Housing Facilities, yesterday.
The public park, located within 35 acres of the reclaimed land that makes up the Port City, is coming alive with a variety of plants such as coconut, palm trees, as well as a host of indigenous plants that have been planted to make the area environmentally friendly. The recreational area consists of walkways, cycle lanes, etc., among its attractions. The Port City public park is three times the size of Galle Face Green, and it will be possible for people to access the Port City from Galle Face.
At present, of the total work-force of 1,600 employees, only 500 are working – keeping in line with the COVD-19 guidelines prepared for the construction industry. With things gradually returning to normal, plans are afoot to commence PCR testing on all workers and reassign them to work.
The work on the Colombo Port City project is being done under the auspices of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is also the Minister of Urban Development, Water Supply and Housing Facilities. The site's developer is the China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC).
