Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday revealed that he did not intend to hang on to his position for long.
“We can’t afford to remain stagnant after the Presidential Election. That is why I am happy to see these youth leaders here today,” he said addressing a group of university students affiliated to the United National Party (UNP) at Sirikotha yesterday. Wickremesinghe pointed out that many trade unions and other groups had come forward to share their ideas about moving forward.
“Accordingly, we will move forward from January. We must identify our weaknesses and move forward correcting them. I do not intend to remain here for long. I have to bring forth new young leadership,” he said, calling on all UNP supporters to work together and initiate a plan which was inclusive.
“I have specially requested for all to unite, stop internal disputes and bring forward an inclusive plan we all can agree on,” he said.
“Our journey should be a united one. I am happy that you all have gathered here,” he told the students, asserting that the party had been criticised for not focusing enough on grassroots groups.
“Mr. Premadasa and the others will take over the work of the Parliament in January and with new groups and all members united, we will move forward,” he said, emphasising that it was time for the youth to speak up.
