The Race the Pearl team, alongside sponsors, unveil the official race jersey
Marking its return for the seventh consecutive year, the ultra-endurance international bicycle race – “Race the Pearl” – will be conducted in Sri Lanka on 7 December 2024 to the delight of racing enthusiasts and spectators island-wide.
The race spans 600 kilometres from Point Pedro to Dondra, connecting 100 cities. This eagerly-anticipated event is an official qualifier for Race Across America (RAAM). Over the years seven nationalities have joined the race and this year over 60 cyclists will join in the unique adventurous race traveling the length of the island. “Race the Pearl” is one of many high-octane mini ultra-distance road cycling races RAAM organisers have selected as a fitting event to name as a qualifier.
Race the Pearl Director and Organiser Yasas Hewage said: “Race the Pearl is one of the most important sports tourism events in the country, as it attracts cyclists and tourists, while also showcasing the adventure and ecotourism options that Sri Lanka offers. The race is an ongoing testament to the power of sports to bring people and communities together while highlighting our rich heritage. Since the race runs through cities and towns, it generates earnings for small and medium scale businesses. We are proud to showcase the grandeur of Sri Lankan dance along the A9 road. under the theme “Dance the A9” in this year’s edition while connecting dance culture in the north and south on a common platform. “Race the Pearl” is a truly unifying event for the nation.”
The race consists of a Solo 24Hr Ride, Solo Two-Day Ride, and a Relay Team with up to five members. This year’s edition features a total of 60 participants. The 24-hour Solo and 24-hour Team Race athletes are eligible to earn the prestigious Pearl Jersey by beating the race time, which is considered the ultimate achievement.
During the course, the riders are set to endure the challenges of the head winds of Elephant Pass, the elevation of Laggala, exciting downhills, sun and rain as well as possible elephant encounters while pushing through the final part of the race in the night. Race the Pearl will be an unforgettable experience for all riders, mainly from overseas, who are guaranteed diverse natural terrains and riding topography of the island.
As one of the benefits of this international event for the community, Race the Pearl is supporting the “Ride School” project to donate bicycles to children in rural schools, thereby enhancing the mobility of students in remote areas.
A forum will be held in Dambulla for tourism-related small businesses, providing a unique opportunity to drive innovation and market access.
Race the Pearl event is organised by Spinner Cycling, with MAS Holdings as a partner for apparel, Jetwing Hotels as the main sponsor, and support from Browns Hotels and Resorts, Pickme for transport, Pulse on digital media, and Business Advisor to support for the small business tourism sector. The event can be followed online via www.racethepearl.com as well as on Facebook and Instagram for updates.
