Presidential Advisor on Parliamentary Affairs, Prof. Ashu Marasinghe yesterday claimed that Ranil Wickremesinghe will contest the upcoming poll as an independent candidate.

Speaking at a media briefing, he emphasised the President’s ability to lead and develop the country.

“The only solution is Ranil Wickremesinghe. He can build this country and has proven it. We should give him the support he needs. We should provide him with the necessary support, particularly since he is running as an independent candidate.

We are certain of this,” Prof. Marasinghe stated.

He highlighted the inclusiveness of Wickremesinghe’s approach, noting that the President invited all political factions to unite in forming a National Government if necessary.

“We all have the right to do politics. The President still invites everyone. Let’s all come together and make a Government if necessary. The entire Parliament can join. It hasn’t stopped,” he said.

However, Prof. Marasinghe acknowledged the current political climate stating, “The problem is that the time is running out and we have to do politics now. That’s why President Wickremesinghe opened his political office today.”

Prof. Marasinghe also mentioned the anticipated timing of the election, suggesting it would likely occur on the first or second Saturday of October 2024.
