Speaking to Daily FT, SLPP Chairman Prof. G.L. Peiris said that the election results had demonstrated the fullest acknowledgement by the public about the total success that had been achieved by the Government.
“We were always convinced of a massive victory, but this has surpassed all expectations, and it is a tribute by the people of our country to an effective leadership. There has been full acknowledgement of the total success that has been achieved in a variety of matters touching the daily life of the people, including the manner in which we dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.
He noted the public had admired the measures the Government had taken to suppress the underworld and tackle the drug menace in the country. According to Prof. Peiris, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s Government has shown significant progress and the people have acknowledged that through voting in favour of the SLPP.
“The people expected rapid performance and the only party which they considered capable of that delivery was the SLPP. This is a vote of overwhelming confidence and we salute the public.”
This was the first time the SLPP contested a General Election and they previously expressed confidence in obtaining a two-thirds majority to amend the 19th Amendment. Ahead of the election, SLPP National Organiser Basil Rajapaksa stated that they would expect to bring a new Constitution to address the shortcomings of the existing Constitution.
