Samagi Jana Balawegaya yesterday said there are no plans of establishing an interim Government with President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at the helm.
“We are prepared to form an interim Government without the current Head of State and Prime Minister,” SJB MP Rajitha Senarathne told journalists yesterday.
MP Senarathne said the era of forming governments with the Rajapaksa’s has ended, affirming that an administration will only be formed after ousting the Rajapaksa-led Government.
MP Eran Wickramaratne said in the event the President doesn’t step down, there are two options that they hope to execute in the near future.
“The Constitution contains provisions to bring forward an impeachment. We have studied the necessary grounds and are moving forward systematically,” he said without divulging further details.
He said the Opposition is also holding discussions with other MPs to obtain a two-thirds majority to pass constitutional amendments.
MP Wickramaratne said the SJB will publicise the names of MPs who are in favour of the amendments and those who are not in the immediate future.
“People of this country have a right to know who is acting for their well-being,” he added.
He assured SJB as the main Opposition, and will continue to work for the benefit of the public and the country.
