SJB says SLPP-backed President and PM will not appease crisis-hit masses

The main Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) warned yesterday that an arrangement of a SLPP-backed President and Prime Minister will not appease the crisis-hit masses and an all-party interim Government will be the solution.

SJB MP Lakshman Kiriella told journalists that efforts are underway to elect Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna-backed President and Prime Minister and this will be against the wishes of the masses and the clergy who have been demanding for an all-party caretaker Government till proper elections are held.

He said that SJB can only muster 62 MPs hence cannot establish a strong Government but the country is demanding a unity Government to lead the country out of the worst economic crisis.

He said with the ouster of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa via the people's protest testifies the SLPP no longer has the mandate to govern the country.

In a related development TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran on Thursday tweeted that the SLPP should not have a role in establishing the future government of the country. He said along with  Gotabaya Rajapaksa, his party SLPP has also lost the mandate and ought not be allowed to exercise their majority in Parliament.

Economist Nishan de Mel earlier this week also tweeted that greatest threat to Sri Lanka stability, at this time, is SLPP asserting its parliament majority to become a proxy for the rejected leaders of the country. He argued that after 2015 and 2019 elections, the Parliament majority of the defeated
