The Samagi Jana Balayegaya (SJB) yesterday suspended the party membership of MPs Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara shortly after they were sworn in as ministers by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella said that the Party could take disciplinary action against the two MPs for breaching party rules.
Kiriella said the SJB decision was to remain in Opposition and extend support to the Government on economic related matters but its MPs were not permitted to join the Cabinet.
Meanwhile, SLFP Leader former President Maithripala Sirisena said his party had proposed the formation of an all-party Government but what is in place now is a SLPP Government.
“Today few of our MPs took oaths as ministers. That is contrary to the Party’s decision. The Central Committee of the Party decided to stay in Opposition and extend support but not to accept any Cabinet positions.
SLFP Nimal Siripala De Silva and Susil Premajayantha joined the Cabinet yesterday.
