Former MP S.M. Marikkar
Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) former MP S.M. Marikkar yesterday said the party’s main responsibility will be to ensure President Anura Dissanayake delivers on the promises he made on the campaign trail. Addressing a press conference in Colombo, Marikkar said the Samagi Jana Sandhanaya (SJS) led by the SJB is committed to ensuring the newly elected President is accountable for fulfilling his promises to the people.
During the press conference, Marikkar also stressed the pressing need for economic relief, emphasising that the expectations of citizens must be met following the recent presidential election.
Marikkar said therefore the party’s responsibility lies in ensuring the President implements essential measures to alleviate the hardships faced by the public. He highlighted the urgent need to reduce taxes, increase state sector salaries, and attract foreign direct investment.
“Our duty is to actively compel the President to fulfill its promises and provide relief to the people,” he asserted. He stressed that the SJS will work tirelessly to bring about the necessary economic reforms that would improve citizens’ livelihoods.
Emphasising the need for a balanced parliament, Marikkar explained that the SJS aims to play a crucial role in supporting positive initiatives while opposing detrimental policies.
He said, “We are committed to supporting the right decisions, opposing the wrong ones, and providing guidance to steer the country in the right direction.” The former MP made it clear that the party’s intentions are aligned with the nation’s interests, rejecting any notion of political sabotage or conspiracy. “We think of the country first, not our political advantage. Our focus is on ensuring that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake’s promises are realised for the benefit of the people,” he added.
Marikkar urged citizens to rally behind the SJS as the party seeks to create a parliamentary environment conducive to progress. He reaffirmed the SJS’s dedication to advocating for economic relief and ensuring that the new President remains accountable to the people, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for Sri Lankans.
