SL, US to make joint statement on tariff resolution: AKD

President Anura Kumara Disanayake yesterday announced that Sri Lanka and the US are to make a joint statement on the resolution of the reciprocal tariff issue.

He made this disclosure during an address at a public rally in Ratnapura.

Disanayake said discussions between the visiting Sri Lankan delegation in Washington, DC, and the US Government on reciprocal tariffs were fruitful.

“The Deputy Finance Minister informed me that the discussion with the US has been fruitful,” Disanayake said.

“We have made meaningful progress,” the President said, adding that the forthcoming joint statement would provide clarity on the outcomes and signal the direction of future bilateral trade relations.

Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, the Secretary of the Ministry of Trade, and the Sri Lankan Ambassador to the United States were engaged in talks with the US administration.

Under the US’s revised trade policy, tariffs as high as 44% have been imposed on Sri Lankan goods, particularly affecting the apparel sector, which is a major export industry for Sri Lanka

These tariffs were introduced as a countermeasure to what the US perceived as unfair trade practices, including high tariffs and non-tariff barriers on US goods.
