SL adds $ 16.6 b more to public debt in 2023

Sri Lanka’s debt-to-GDP ratio reached its highest point in 2022, surpassing 120% in central Government debt to GDP and 128% in public debt to GDP. In 2023, the country suspended payments on selected foreign debt and entered into an IMF program focusing on debt sustainability. 

Despite these measures, the total central Government debt increased by an additional $ 16.6 billion or by 21% during this period, indicating ongoing challenges in managing the country’s debt burden, according to charts.lk
