Ambassador Dr. Palitha Kohona recently urged Chinese biomedical firms to establish manufacturing plants in Sri Lanka.

He made this request during a visit to Qingdao to witness the signing of the letter of intent to establish sister city relations with Kandy, during which he also met officials of the Hisense and Haier Biomedical companies.

Hisense is a global giant in white goods and home appliances production and is increasingly using artificial intelligence to make its products meet the high expectations of a very demanding client base. Hisense has sold over 100,000 appliances in Sri Lanka.

Ambassador Dr. Kohona’s suggestion that Hisense consider establishing a production facility in Sri Lanka to not only to cater to domestic demand but also to the regional market was received enthusiastically.

Ambassador Kohona’s visit to Haier Biomedical head office and display facility enabled him to understand the extent to which Haier Biomedical has contributed to Sri Lanka’s vaccination drive. A special piece of equipment that had been shipped to Sri Lanka with the assistance of UNICEF was designed to store a particular brand of vaccine at -80c.

Haier Biomedical had links with Lanka Hospitals, JKU Hospital and provincial hospitals. Its biggest markets were in Europe and the USA.
