SLPP, SLFP split over Presidential election date

The SLPP yesterday called for conducting the Presidential elections at the earliest possible time while the SLFP wanted it on the latest possible date.  SLPP General Secretary Sagara Kariyawasam wrote to the Election Commission requesting that the poll be held on the earliest possible date while the SLFP General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara wrote asking the poll be held on the latest possible date.

The letters were sent as the Election Commission prepares to call for nominations for the poll which has to be held between 9 November and 7 December.

A Commission official said that it would make an independent decision on the poll date. (CK)
