Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) yesterday decided to support Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe in the election of the President to be held in the Parliament.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting of SLPP yesterday after MP Dullas Alahapperuma announced that he would run for the vacant post of President.

SLPP General Secretary and MP Sagara Kariyawasam in a statement said a unanimous decision has been reached to support Ranil Wickremesinghe in the election of the President to be held in Parliament next week.

SLPP which has the majority in the current Parliament, had decided not to field a candidate for the election of the current president.

However, taking into account the impact of the MP Alahapperuma’s decision on the basic policy of the party, SLPP decided to give full support to Ranil Wickremesinghe, the statement by Kariyawasam added.
