The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) yesterday said it would launch a mobile registration campaign for all restaurants and hotels operating in Mirissa this week.
The registration will be carried out according to the provisions of the SLTDA Act, based on submission of relevant documents and statements.
The authority further pointed out that for those who failed to meet standards of regulatory process due to justifiable reasons, a temporary registration would be issued subjected to review.
“A team of SLTDA officials will visit these establishments in Mirissa and collect information to create a data base, where immediate license would be given for those who possess a valid trade license with clear financial statements,” an official told Daily FT.
The SLTDA will also seek legal advice from the Attorney General’s Department on matters pertaining to legal issues to expedite the registering process according to the SLTDA requirements.
The SLTDA said it would individually attend to those cases and review their facilities before registering them with the authority.
The SLTDA strictly implemented and enforced the regulations over the hoteliers after a group of Dutch tourists were assaulted in Mirissa on 8 April.
Minister of Tourism Development and Christian Religious Affairs John Amaratunga raised concerns over the tourists’ security and instructed officials to regulate the hoteliers in Mirissa following the tragic incident.
