To ensure the stabilisation of egg prices in the market and meet the demand for the upcoming festive season the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved a new proposal to import eggs till end of the year.

“Given the unaffordable prices of eggs in the market and to meet the rising demand ahead of the festive season, the Government decided to continue importation of the necessary egg stocks through the Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation,” Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister Bandula Gunawardena said during the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.

Previously, the Government allowed importing eggs to support price stability and ensure adequate supply for both consumers and businesses during key festive periods.

As per the Cabinet decision taken on 18 March 2024, Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Corporation has imported 224 million eggs so far.

“Of these, 95% have been distributed to consumers at an affordable price of Rs. 37 per egg,” Gunawardena added.

The initial importation period ended on 30 April 2024.

The proposal presented by Trade, Commerce and Food Security Minister Nalin Fernando was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
