Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has accused former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa of causing Sri Lanka’s economic crisis by taking uninformed financial decisions.
“They acted without a proper knowledge of the economy thereby causing Sri Lanka’s bankruptcy,” he said. Premadasa also blamed the Government that existed for the last two-and-a-half years for violating the people’s trust and creating the current crisis situation.
Premadasa made these remarks during a meeting held with vehicle importers this week.
“When the Finance Committee of the Parliament met regarding the ongoing economic crisis, former Government stalwarts like P.B. Jayasundera and Ajith Nivard Cabral claimed that major tax breaks were approved by the Cabinet and given according to the Government’s vistas of prosperity policy framework,” he said, adding that however, these individuals who governed the country for two years had no knowledge on the subject of economy.
Premadasa noted that as a result of this, small and medium-scale industrialists and entrepreneurs as well as all industries have suffered massive losses. “The banking system is also now at risk. The heroes who were elected to save the country left it bankrupt,” he said.
“Therefore, when any candidate presents a series of policies in the future the people of the country must analyse how it will affect the future. They must then appoint a person who can lead the country’s economy,” he said.
