violence unleashed on the people on 9 May following former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s farewell is continuing to this day.

“Let's forget all the differences, let's put aside our ideologies for a moment and come together to defeat this State-sponsored violence,” he said.

Premadasa made these comments while addressing an event against State repression organised by the Trade Union and Mass Organisation on Wednesday at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo.

Premadasa said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya will not be part of the Government despite being offered various positions if it continues to use repression against the citizen’s struggle. “The Government is proposing an all-party Government while adopting a predatory nature of governance,” he said.

According to him, the Government is using the Prevention of Terrorism Act to violate the rights of the country’s citizens and said the Government has no right to either curtail or abolish the rights of the people.

The event was also attended by representatives of other political parties, trade unions, civil society organisations, artists and various other organisations. Officials of several diplomatic missions in Colombo were also in attendance.
