SJB and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said yesterday savoured what he described as victory for millions of working people after the party successfully forced amendments to the Surcharge Tax Gazette.
The Attorney General yesterday told the Supreme Court that an amendment would be brought to remove 13 funds including EPF and ETF from the one off 25% surcharge tax on profit made in FY20/21.
The petition filed by SJB and nine other parties including private sector companies were heard by the Supreme Court.
“It is a victory for millions of working people in this country,” the SJB Leader said following the AG’s notification.
“Samagi Jana Balawegaya is the only political party that has gone to court for that victory and we are humbly proud of it in the name of the entire working people of this country,” Premadasa added.
He said the Government arbitrarily planned to levy a surcharge on the funds of hundreds of thousands of workers, including the Employees Provident Fund, and: “we fought unconditionally on behalf of the people against it.”
