Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa on Saturday said the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) along with tens of thousands will take to the streets in order to protect the democracy within the country.
“Everything in this country now is working backwards, including the President. He is threatening the people claiming he will deploy the military and declare a state of emergency. In a civilised country with democratic values if there are crimes taking place then strict action must be taken,” he said.
According to him, however, the President and the Government are now in fear of the people.
“The President is not even allowing two people to gather. People cannot even walk on the street. He is attempting to curtail that right as well. What right or power does the President have to tell the people they cannot take to the streets without permission?” he asked.
Premadasa made these comments, at the party electoral organising meeting held in Mawanella over the weekend.
“If the President seeks to challenge the people in this manner, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya is prepared to take to the streets along with tens of thousands,” Premadasa said, adding that he along with his party is not afraid of threats or restrictions. “Are you challenging us? We cannot be stopped through any form of restrictions to democracy,” he said.
Noting that many industries in the country have now collapsed, Premadasa said that those who caused this disastrous situation have emerged yet again. “Both factories opened by Ranasinghe Premadasa in Mawanella have closed down. The situation is similar in many other electorates. Children cannot purchase their books or uniforms anymore. People do not even have food. Pregnant mothers do not have Thriposha. The whole country is suffering. Those who are responsible for this now are saying let’s rise again,” he said.
Premadasa said it is President Wickremesinghe who has facilitated the rise of the Sri Lanka Podujana Party and its politicians responsible for the current crisis. “This Government cannot provide solutions to the people,” he said, adding that the SJB will resolve these issues.
