The Defence Ministry yesterday issued to the armed forces “shoot-on-sight” orders against those who resort to violence, vandalism or looting as Defence Secretary General (Retd.) Kamal Gunaratne urged

protestors to exercise calm and not resort to violence.
The Government also extended the curfew by another day till 7.00 a.m. Thursday.
“I appeal to young men and women to refrain from engaging in violence. Do not set fire to public and private property and engage in your struggle in a democratic and peaceful manner,” Gunaratne said.
He warned that looters have taken the opportunity to commit crime under the guise of the peaceful protests, adding that it is a very unfortunate situation.
The Defence Secretary also appealed to religious leaders to advice the youth on peaceful conduct.
He warned if looting and property damage continues, the forces and the Police will be compelled to strictly enforce the law against the violators.
Police said 8 people were killed due to violence and clashes whilst over 220 injured. Police also revealed that 38 houses and 47 vehicles were burnt and a further 65 houses and 41 vehicles were partly damaged.
