  • Ministry increases oversight in wake of unscheduled power cuts last week; CEB appeals to reduce consumption

A six-member committee was appointed by the Power and Energy Ministry yesterday to review power generation on a daily basis, with its members comprising one Ministry officer, two Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) officers and two Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) officers.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, the committee will be required to submit a daily report to Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera on the activities of the Ministry, CEB and the CPC.

The Minister had also advised the relevant officers that no decision that inconveniences the public should be taken and that he should be notified of all issues. The discussion also touched on the unapproved power interruptions reported in many parts of the island on 3 February, with the Minister saying that there would be no room for such disruptions in the future.

The move comes after the CEB appealed to the public to reduce power consumption, citing concerns over a possible power cut in the next few weeks.
