The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved the formation of a Special Committee chaired by the Mass Media Secretary, including representatives from relevant institutions, to assess the requirements and technology necessary for implementing the Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting Project. The committee is tasked with submitting a report to the Cabinet with observations and recommendations to maximise the benefits of the project for the people.
In line with global trends, the Cabinet originally approved the conversion of television broadcasting from analog to digital in 2009. However, the implementation of this transition faced delays. In July 2022, approval was granted to proceed with the project using Japan’s ISBD-T technology.
“With the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) agreeing to fund the project, it is now set to move forward, bringing modern digital broadcasting technology to the country,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Vijitha Herath said at the post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.
