The Government yesterday increased the special commodity levy on a kilo of imported potatoes by Rs. 30 for six months.

The Finance Ministry said the decision to increase the levy was taken to protect the local farmers and ensure price stabilisation.

The Ministry said accordingly, the new levy will be Rs. 50 per kilogram. However, the price of imported potatoes has been reduced at the Pettah wholesale market in line with the rupee’s appreciation against the dollar.
