Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board yesterday launched the country’s first-ever spice-related official website – www.spicelk.com, pioneering the national initiative to spice up the SME’s contribution to access the international market.
Industries and Plantation Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana launched the website at the Industries Ministry premises yesterday.
The Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board, operating under the Plantation Industries Ministry has developed the website with the aim of taking the quality products of Sri Lanka’s small and medium-scale spice producers to the local and international markets.
The Minister noted that the Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board spearhead the project to realise the full potential of the export industry, as an initial step towards taking the local SME products to the international market.
“At a time when some Government institutions are closing due to losses, Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board must be commended for the efforts taken to enhance opportunities for small and medium producers to boost their income, find new markets globally via digital space. As a State institution, we must appreciate their commitment to developing the website within a short period of one and a half years,” he added.
Minister Pathirana said there is a huge demand for spices in countries like China, adding the need to focus on the possibilities of entering such markets.
“Access to such markets is important for local SME spice producers as well as growers,” she stressed.
The website contains information about Sri Lanka’s local spices as well as information about the 24 markets operated by the Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board. It also enables to order of spice products to any place in Sri Lanka through the online system and the Sri Lanka Postal Department will deliver products to the customers.
Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board has also planned to take extend this service to overseas customers to purchase Made in Sri Lanka or authentic Sri Lankan spices through the online system.
Plantation Industry Ministry Secretary Janaka Dharmakeerthy, Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board Chairman Kumuduni Gunasekara, Spices and Allied Products Marketing Board Chief Executive Director Mahesh Gunaratne, Sri Lanka Industrial Development Board Chairman Dr. Saranga Alahapperuma were also present on this occasion.
