The Cabinet of Ministers on Monday approved the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with India to boost socioeconomic development and furthering bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
The proposal to this effect presented by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake focuses on advancing various sectors in the Eastern Province with an allocation of over Rs. 2.3 billion (Rs. 2,371 million).
“The MoU outlines a total of 33 development projects aimed at improving infrastructure, boosting economic growth and empowering local communities,” Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday.
He said the key sectors identified for development through this initiative include; education, healthcare, agriculture, irrigation, tourism and fisheries.
“The specific allocations within the total funding include; Rs. 315 million for education, Rs. 780 million for healthcare, Rs. 620 million for agriculture and Rs. 230 million for fisheries,” he elaborated.
The Cabinet Spokesman said these projects are expected not only to strengthen socioeconomic development in the region, but also to improve the quality of life for people through targeted infrastructure and community empowerment initiatives.
