Sri Lanka yesterday engaged in discussions with the Core Group on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva ahead of the 51st session scheduled to begin today.
The Sri Lankan delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister Ali Sabry held discussions on constructive engagement and working together to achieve effective and sustainable progress.
Minister Ali Sabry and Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe have met with Acting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al- Nashif Saturday.
During the meeting, Minister Sabry and Minister Rajapakshe discussed the progress the country has made and the current steps being taken to improve human rights practices in Sri Lanka. They also reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to continued engagement with the UN Human Rights Council.
Meeting with UNHRC President Fedrico Villegas on 9 September, the ministers discussed key areas including Sri Lanka’s continued engagement to improve human rights practices and also partnering to face the present challenges.
Minister Sabry has also reiterated the importance of strengthening domestic mechanisms.
The 51st regular session of the Human Rights Council will be held from 12 September to 7 October and a comprehensive report on the situation of human rights in Sri Lanka will be presented by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
