In a significant development, the Government has decided to recognise top-tier foreign medical degrees in Sri Lanka.
“The Cabinet of Ministers gave the green light to enact necessary legal provisions to ensure medical degrees from foreign universities ranked within the top 1,000 worldwide can be accepted in Sri Lanka,” a statement comprising weekly Cabinet Decisions issued by the Government Information Department noted.
The decision was based on a report including the recommendations of the committee appointed in May.
A committee, spearheaded by the Prime Minister’s Secretary received Cabinet approval and was tasked with developing a national policy.
This policy included establishing standards and criteria for the accreditation of medical degrees from globally esteemed universities.
Additionally, the committee was entrusted to make recommendations on how to modify the Medical Ordinance's provisions to better suit the country's needs.
The joint proposal, put forth by President Ranil Wickremesinghe and Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, received Cabinet approval during Monday's meeting.
