Sri Lanka to host International Twin Congress in August

Sri Lanka is set to take the global stage in twin research and medical advancements as it prepares to host the Joint 8th World Congress on Twin Pregnancy and the 20th Congress of the International Society of Twin Studies (ISTS) from 10 to 12 August.

This prestigious event will bring together world-renowned researchers, clinicians, and scientists to discuss the latest advancements in twin related research, genetics, epigenetics, psychology, and obstetrics.

In collaboration with the ISTS, the International council of multiple birth organisations (ICOMBO), the International and European School of Perinatal, Neonatal and Reproductive medicine (PREIS School) and the Journal of Twin research and Human Genetics, this year’s congress will provide a multidisciplinary platform to explore cutting-edge research and medical breakthroughs related to twins and multiple births.

This year’s theme emphasises the unique significance of twins in both Science and Society, as they bridge multiple frontiers.

The Institute for Research and Development in Health and Social Care (IRD), a premier research institute in Sri Lanka, will be hosting the congress in partnership with the Sri Lankan Twin Registry (SLTR). The IRD, under the leadership of Prof. Athula Sumathipala, has played a pioneering role in twin research, epidemiology, and public health. The IRD won the award for Excellence in International Collaborations from the National Science Foundation of Sri Lanka in 2018. Prof. Sumathipala, who also serves as the Secretary General of ISTS, has been instrumental in bringing this global event to Sri Lanka.

The congress will feature scientific presentations, panel discussions, and networking sessions, creating a platform for future collaborations in twin research and related fields. Additionally, it will allow Sri Lanka to highlight its excellence in Twin research while providing a boost to the country’s academic and healthcare sectors. Currently there are 61 twin registries across 25 countries, and we eagerly anticipate the participation of these registries.

The Twin Congress 2025 will not only highlight advancements in twin research but also showcase Sri Lanka’s unique cultural heritage and scientific contributions. Participants will have the opportunity to explore Sri Lanka’s Twin Registry, which has been a vital resource for international twin studies since its establishment in 1997. The Sri Lankan Twin Registry, the largest of its kind in South Asia, contains data on over 9,000 twin pairs and has been pivotal in conducting studies on twin genetics and mental health.
