The Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday approved a Government-to-Government transaction to procure high-quality cattle and bovine genetic material to boost the country’s dairy production capabilities.

This initiative follows challenges in executing procurement procedures despite a Budget allocation of Rs. 100 million for the years 2023 and 2024.

Cabinet Spokesman and Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said the Pakistan Trade Development Authority has agreed to supply Sri Lanka with seven fertile male bulls, including five of the Sahival breed and two of the Niliravi breed. Both breeds are renowned for their genetic potential to improve milk production and breeding programs. The Sahival breed, originating from Pakistan is known for its heat tolerance and high milk yield, while Niliravi breed is regarded for its robust physical characteristics and adaptability to tropical climates.

Speaking at the weekly post-Cabinet meeting media briefing yesterday, he said the Cabinet also approved the purchase of 20,000 doses of cow semen from India’s National Dairy Development Board. This genetic material will support artificial insemination programs aimed at enhancing milk yield and herd quality across the country.

The introduction of superior genetic material is expected to increase the production of the dairy milk industry, as it aligns with the Government’s vision of strengthening the agricultural sector and reducing dependency on imported milk products.
