In a significant move aimed at enhancing the welfare and protection of Sri Lankan migrant workers, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the Sri Lanka National Policy and Action Plan on Migration for Employment 2023-2027.
The newly formulated policy represents a meticulous review of the 2008 policy, with extensive input and feedback sought from various stakeholders, including Ministries, Migrant Workers and their families, Foreign Employment Agencies, the private sector, Civil Society Organisations, Trade Unions, Academics, Research Institutes, Development Partners, International Non-Governmental Organisations, and United Nations Agencies.
This comprehensive policy framework marks a substantial update to the 2008 National Labour Migration Policy, reflecting the evolving landscape of labour migration and the changing needs of the country’s overseas workforce.
The comprehensive document outlines key strategies and objectives to govern labour migration for the period from 2023 to 2027.
The proposal to this effect submitted by Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers.
