President Anura Kumara Dissanayake yesterday expressed his vision for a transformative political culture in Sri Lanka, vowing to establish a Government that unites all regions of the country and advances populist reforms through a strengthened Parliamentary system.

Speaking to the media after casting his vote at the Panchikawatta Abeysingharama temple polling station yesterday morning, the President stressed a powerful Parliamentary power will suffice to bring about people-friendly reforms without relying on a two-thirds majority. “Historically, rulers have sought two-thirds power to pass laws against the people,” President Dissanayake noted. He pointed out that his administration’s populist proposals have garnered widespread support, making opposition to them unlikely. “A strong Parliamentary power is enough; with bills that represent the will of the people, no one can stand against them,” he added.  President Dissanayake further highlighted his commitment to fostering a unified political culture across Sri Lanka, bringing together the North, South, East, and West under a single vision of progress and inclusivity. He pledged that, under the National People’s Power (NPP) Government, each province will play a role in shaping the nation’s future, promoting democratic harmony and collective governance. Reflecting on the recent Presidential election campaign, President Dissanayake noted that it was conducted with unprecedented peace and democratic freedom, setting a standard for future elections.

“The people experienced one of the most peaceful election campaigns in history under the National People’s Power Government, and this should be the political culture of our country,” he said, indicating that the NPP aims to uphold these values in future governance.
