Sunil Jayarathne, newly appointed Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAASL), will resume his duties today (4).
He was the former Chairman/Director General of the National Enterprise Development Authority (NEDA) under the purview of the Industries Ministry and former Additional Director General of Sri Lanka Customs.
He holds over 37 years of experience in the Department of Customs while also being the Media Spokesman. He led many Technical and Operational Committees at Sri Lanka Customs, shouldering different portfolios such as Chairman – Committee on Customs Paperless Trade Initiative, Chairman – Implementation of the World Trade Organisation’s Trade Facilitation Agreement (WTO – TFA), Chairman for the installation of non-intrusive cargo scanners at the Colombo Port, and Vice Chairman of the Customs Valuation Technical Committee, in contributing towards the successful implementation of Government policy decisions and various international best practices within the Sri Lankan border context.
Jayarathne is also an accredited expert trainer/technical and operational adviser for a key trade facilitation measure of the World Customs Organisation, Brussels, called the ‘Time Release Study’. He had also shouldered the responsibility of National Trade Facilitation Committee (NTFC) Secretariat Head for the implementation of numerous best border practices under the World Trade Organisation’s (Geneva) Trade Facilitation Agreement.
Additionally, he had been serving as a resource person in the Department of Customs on Trade Facilitation and Customs Valuation for more than two decades. He possesses vast exposure in international trade and border related activities, having worked with the leading trade chambers of Sri Lanka and international organisations such as the WCO, WTO, and many other international donor agencies for the past couple of decades.
