The Government has decided to end the voucher system to distribute school uniforms introduced by the previous administration and instead allow local textile companies to manufacture the needed cloth, which is estimated to cost Rs. 2 billion in public funds.
The Government has provided school uniform cloths since 1995 for students in Government, Government-aided schools and student bhikkus who study in pirivenas.
The voucher system has been used for this purpose during 2015-2020 period.
Due to the COVID-19 epidemic in the country it has been realised that it is appropriate to produce school uniforms locally by encouraging local textile manufacturers.
Accordingly Cabinet approval was granted to purchase school uniform cloth from local textile manufacturers who are registered under the Industry and Supply Chain Management Ministry headed by Minister Wimal Weerawansa.
