Former Attorney General Dappula de Livera has been informed to appear before the Terrorism Investigation Division today (19) to record a statement in relation to the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

Justice, Prison Affairs and Constitutional Reforms Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe told journalists yesterday that the statement made by the former Attorney General regarding the Easter Sunday attacks on the day he was vacating his office (in May 2021) has caused concerns among the victims and the general public.

“His comment made all victims, the catholic community and the public puzzle why the former Attorney General did not take any actions when he had the capacity to re-examine or do a thorough investigation into the terror attacks. The Cardinal and the catholic community have openly stated that they were also not satisfied with the results of the investigations and the actions taken by the authorities. Thus, we want the former Attorney General to provide information regarding his controversial statement of a conspirator or a group behind the Easter Sunday attacks,” he added.

Minister Rajapakshe said the IGP was directed to inform Former Attorney General de Livera to appear before the TID to record a statement he made on the Easter Sunday attacks in 2019.

“Recording a statement from the former Attorney General regarding the claim is imperative as it has impacted the credibility of the investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday bomb attacks,” he added.

He noted that a statement must be recorded from the former Attorney General regarding the claim since it impacts the credibility of the investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday Bomb attacks.

In May 2021, former Attorney General Dappula de Livera was quoted as saying there is a grand conspiracy behind the 2019 Easter attacks.

At the time de Livera noted that the information by the State Intelligence Service with times, targets, places, methods of attacks and other information is clear evidence there was a grand conspiracy in place.

On a previous occasion Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Ret. General Kamal Gunaratne said de Livera may be summoned to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over his comments as it is directly linked to the investigations being conducted into the attack.
