Technology State Minister outlines 7-year plan for DIGIECON 2030

State Minister of Technology Kanaka Herath recently shed light on Sri Lanka’s ambitious drive towards a digital future.

Speaking at the 7th China-South Asia Expo and 27th China Kunming Fair, he said the ambitious seven-year plan aims to drive the country towards an inclusive digital economy, harnessing advanced technology-based solutions commencing this year. 

He said “Digital Economy 2030” is spearheaded by the Technology Ministry and endorsed by President Ranil Wickremesinghe. The initiative aims guide Sri Lanka’s various industry sectors using the Industry 5.0 framework to achieve their full potential, both domestically and in global markets, supported by a robust digital infrastructure. 

He also highlighted key initiatives including the establishment of a Universal Digital Identity platform, streamlined Government payments, a digital nomad visa scheme and a single-window approval process for the ICT sector. 

Noting that Government-to-Government (G2G) collaboration stands as a cornerstone in Sri Lanka’s economic revival strategy, the State Minister elaborated on Sri Lanka’s commitment to a comprehensive digital transformation through the “DIGIECON Sri Lanka 2030” initiative. 

As part of DIGIECON 2023’s efforts, scheduled for October to November, Herath unveiled plans for a digital economy master plan and regulatory policy framework. The initiative also encompasses 17+ national and international events fostering an environment for global investors, start-ups, and industry leaders to collaborate and innovate. 

He also underscored the importance of collaborative efforts towards equitable digital growth. State Minister Herath expressed gratitude to China for its steadfast support in Sri Lanka’s infrastructure development and extended a warm invitation to the People’s Republic of China for active participation in the DIGIECON Sri Lanka 2030 journey through G2G and B2B collaborations. 

Highlighting the broader regional context, Minister Herath emphasised Asia’s expansive and diverse digital landscape, with the region leading the charge in digital innovation. The State Minister stressed the importance of ensuring that digitisation benefits are shared inclusively, focusing on enhancing digital infrastructure, upgrading digital literacy, and facilitating financing for SMEs. 

Minister Herath’s speech also captured the delicate balance between driving digital progress and managing potential risks, alluding to the necessity for robust policy responses. He underscored the value of global and regional collaborations, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s dedication to supporting those who may be left behind as the nation accelerates its digital evolution.
