President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday was emphatic that terminating bankruptcy was his first priority whilst focus on polls will be later.

“People want to emerge out of the crisis fast, so my priority is to terminate the bankruptcy first and decide on elections thereafter,” Wickremesinghe told editors of print and electronic media yesterday during a post-Budget discussion at the Presidential Secretariat.

Wickremesinghe’s response came when pressed by editors whether he plans to contest the next Presidential election and under which party or mandate. “It is too early, but I can say UNP will contest and will win as we have been honest and spoken the truth,” said the President who however added that the immediate task is to turnaround the economy.
