Public Security Minister Tiran Alles yesterday called on the Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and the Catholic Committee to collaboratively review all investigations conducted thus far on Easter Sunday attacks and collectively identify the perpetrators to ensure justice is served.
Addressing a gathering, he assured commitment to facilitating a comprehensive review of the investigations surrounding the tragic events of Easter Sunday 2019.
“Since assuming office two years ago, I have actively engaged with the Cardinal and the Catholic Committee, urging them to identify any missing components or loopholes in the investigations. I have pledged my full support and cooperation to the Cardinal and the Catholic Committee, providing them with all necessary investigation materials and offering to conduct a detailed presentation on the progress made thus far,” stated Minister Alles.
He reiterated his promise to apprehend any individuals, regardless of their stature, if found to be involved in the conspiracy behind the attacks.
Expressing disappointment with recent statements from some members of the Catholic clergy, Minister Alles highlighted the need for a unified approach in addressing the aftermath of the attacks.
He noted that while efforts have been made to address shortcomings in the investigation, some individuals continue to focus solely on perceived shortcomings in the Government’s response.
“As the Minister responsible for public security, I acknowledge the importance of holding accountable those who may have overlooked critical aspects of the investigation. However, our primary focus should be on identifying those who masterminded and orchestrated these heinous acts through a collective effort and I need that support from the Cardinal and the Catholic Committee,” affirmed Minister Alles.
He stressed the urgency of prioritising efforts to uncover the true masterminds behind the Easter Sunday attacks, underscoring the importance of cooperation and unity in the pursuit of justice.
The Minister called upon all stakeholders, including religious leaders, law enforcement agencies and Government officials, to work together towards this common goal.
