Treasury Secretary S.R. Attygalle

Treasury Secretary S.R. Attygalle yesterday denied rumours that he has resigned from his post.

Speculation was rife for the past few weeks that the senior most official of the Finance Ministry was contemplating or has tendered his resignation.

“I am very much in office,” said Attygalle when contacted by the Daily FT about the speculation.

Because of a medical condition, he had been indisposed for a few weeks which officials said may have fuelled speculation which incidentally was at a time when the Government is facing extreme challenges in terms of fiscal situation and upcoming debt repayment.

Attygalle, has over 25 years of experience in both fiscal and monetary policy having served in many positions including as Director General of both the Department of Fiscal Policy and Department of Public Enterprises. He was also a Deputy Governor of the Central Bank and has been on release to the Treasury since 2003.
