US President Donald Trump has signed the US Omnibus Spending Bill, providing continued authorisation of the Generalised System of Preferences (GSP), through 31 December 2020, benefiting Sri Lanka and other beneficiary countries.

The GSP program, which enhances the trade relationship between the United States and international partners, allows beneficiary countries to export products to the US without duty and both Sri Lanka and Maldives are eligible for the program.

The GSP program expired on 31 December 2017 since the US Congress did not reauthorise GSP before adjourning for 2018.
